The prevention of high-risk events is managed through the implementation of a critical control monitoring program, where critical control audits are conducted by leadership teams to ensure these controls are in place and effective.
Fortescue conducts an annual Safety Excellence and Culture Survey to engage with employees and contractors and identify further opportunities to improve our unique safety culture.
In FY18, the survey was completed by 94 per cent of eligible participants, compared to 92 per cent in FY17. This represents almost 6,700 responses.
Promoting Healthy Lifestyles
A healthy body and mind helps individuals succeed at both home and work and contributes to stronger relationships with those around us.
To support our employees on the journey to better health, Fortescue introduced Health inSite in February 2018, an online health and wellbeing resource that provides individuals with tailored information and advice based on their health profile.

Importantly, we are leading from the front. In FY17, Fortescue became the first ASX20 company to have five women on the board. Today, the majority of our nine-person Board of Directors are women. In our leadership team, six out of 29 are women, representing 20 per cent of the group.

Workplace Gender Equality Report
Fortescue's 2019 report to the Workplace Gender Equality Agency demonstrated the lead role we are taking in gender equality and diversity initiatives within the mining sector.
This year's highlights include an increase in our female participation rate and commencing the White Ribbon Accreditation process which saw the introduction of 10 days paid Family and Domestic Violence Leave.
Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index
In FY18, Fortescue was recognised by the Bloomberg Gender-Equality Index for supporting a gender diverse environment across the business.
The GEI measures gender equality across internal company statistics, employee policies, external community support and engagement and gender-conscious product offerings.
Fortescue was the only mining company amongst the six Australian companies recognised.

Fortescue runs successful graduate and apprenticeship programs, as part of our commitment to building the next generation of employees in the mining sector.
In FY18, our apprenticeship program had its largest cohort of graduates, all of whom gained permanent employment with Fortescue.
We are particularly proud that 79 per cent of our apprentices are Aboriginal, compared to 3.5 per cent Australia-wide.
