Mar 2, 2018

Local community organisations involved in programs, activities and events in the Pilbara are encouraged to apply for funding of up to $5,000 through the Fortescue Community Support program.

The grants are available to support community projects within the Town of Port Hedland, Shires of East Pilbara and Ashburton and City of Karratha, with a focus on initiatives that support education and training, Aboriginal engagement, health and wellness, community safety and involvement, economic development and environmental responsibility.

Fortescue General Manager Hedland Operations Fernando Pereira said Fortescue was committed to ensuring Pilbara communities benefitted from the Company’s growth and development.

“In the last funding round, we provided assistance to over 40 Pilbara-based community initiatives and we are looking forward to working with another group of grassroots organisations focussed on making a positive impact in the community,” Mr Pereira said.

Through the last funding round, the Munga Tharndu Maya Women’s Refuge, operated by the Mawarnkarra Health Service in Roebourne, received $4,750 for upgrades to their facility.

The safe house provides short-term crisis and refuge accommodation for women experiencing or at risk of homelessness due to family or domestic violence or other forms of crisis.

With Fortescue’s assistance Mawarnkarra Health Service were able to upgrade the playground equipment at the safe house to provide a place and experience for their clients and their children to enjoy during an otherwise stressful time in their lives.

Applications for the grants are open from 1 March to 31 March 2018. For more information, visit or email
